For twenty-six years, General Motors owned the two most trusted car brands to come out of Sweden. One of them, Volvo, it sold in 1999 and watched grow into one of the most respected automakers on earth. The other it bought outright in 2000, folded into its own parts bins and platform-sharing plans, and then let collapse into bankruptcy within a decade. That second brand was Saab — a company that started by building fighter planes, spent half a century building some of the strangest and most beloved cars in Europe, and then vanished so completely that most drivers under thirty have never seen one on the road.
This is the story of how a Swedish aircraft manufacturer ended up building turbocharged hatchbacks with the ignition key on the floor, why rally drivers and engineers loved Saabs long after accountants stopped, and what actually killed a brand that Volvo’s own safety engineers once considered their fiercest domestic rival.
Born From a Fighter Jet Factory
Saab’s name is an acronym: Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, or Swedish Aeroplane Company. It was founded in 1937 in Trollhättan and Linköping, not to build cars at all, but to give neutral Sweden its own domestic capability to design and manufacture military aircraft as war loomed over Europe. By the time the Second World War ended, Saab had a factory full of aeronautical engineers, a stockpile of aerospace-grade manufacturing know-how, and a serious problem: peacetime Europe did not need nearly as many fighter jets.
Rather than lay off its engineers, Saab’s leadership handed them an unusual brief in 1945: design a car, and design it the way you would design an aircraft. The result, unveiled in 1947 and put into production as the Saab 92 in 1949, looked like nothing else on Swedish roads. Its body was a smooth, teardrop-shaped shell, developed using wind-tunnel testing borrowed directly from aircraft design, because the same engineers who had spent years chasing drag coefficients on fighter planes saw no reason to stop once they started designing cars. It was front-wheel drive at a time when that was still unusual, powered by a small two-stroke engine, and built by people who had never designed a production automobile before — which, as it turned out, was exactly why it looked and drove like nothing else on the market.
Turbochargers, Rally Wins, and a Genuinely Strange Genius
What followed over the next three decades was one of the more idiosyncratic engineering cultures in the entire auto industry. The Saab 96, launched in 1960, became a fixture on European rally stages through the 1960s, winning the Monte Carlo Rally twice with driver Erik Carlsson at the wheel — proof that Saab’s aircraft-honed obsession with aerodynamics and structural rigidity translated directly into cars that could survive being thrown sideways down an icy mountain road at speed.
Then, in 1977, Saab did something no other mainstream manufacturer had done: it put a turbocharger into a production road car people could actually buy. The Saab 99 Turbo took a technology previously reserved for aircraft engines and racing cars and made it available to an ordinary commuter, arriving years before Volkswagen, Audi, or Porsche brought turbocharging to their own mainstream lineups. It is difficult to overstate how radical this was at the time — and how directly it traced back to the same aerospace engineering instincts that had shaped the original Saab 92.
Saab’s cars through this era earned a reputation for being brilliant and bizarre in equal measure. The ignition switch sat on the floor of the centre console rather than the steering column, supposedly so a driver could never injure a knee on the key in a crash, and reportedly a holdover from where the ignition sat in Saab’s aircraft cockpits. Headlight wipers, heated seats, and asymmetric wraparound windscreens turned up on Saabs years before competitors considered them worth the engineering effort. It was a brand built by people who treated a car less like a consumer product and more like a small aircraft that happened to stay on the ground, and it built a loyal, almost cult-like following among drivers who valued that eccentricity over showroom polish.
General Motors, and the Slow Loss of an Identity
Saab’s problem was never its engineering. It was scale. Building idiosyncratic, aircraft-influenced cars in relatively small numbers is an expensive way to run a car company, and by the late 1980s Saab’s automotive division needed a partner with deeper pockets. In 1990, General Motors bought 50% of Saab Automobile; by 2000, it owned the whole thing outright.
What followed was the slow-motion version of a familiar story in the auto industry: a distinctive engineering culture absorbed into a much larger corporate parent’s platform-sharing strategy, one badge-engineered model at a time. Saabs increasingly rode on shared GM platforms and borrowed components from Opel and Subaru, diluting the very quirks that had made the brand worth buying in the first place. Loyal Saab owners noticed immediately, and sales that had once been sustained by genuine engineering distinctiveness began sliding as the cars themselves became less distinctive.
The 2008 financial crisis, which pushed GM itself into bankruptcy and a government bailout, made Saab’s position untenable. GM put the brand up for sale in 2009. A brief, chaotic period followed: a Swedish supercar maker called Koenigsegg negotiated a deal that collapsed, before Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars completed a purchase in early 2010. Spyker kept Saab alive for barely eighteen months before it, too, ran out of money. Saab Automobile filed for bankruptcy in December 2011.
A Brief Electric Afterlife, Then Silence
The Saab name did not disappear immediately. A consortium called National Electric Vehicle Sweden, or NEVS, bought the remaining assets out of bankruptcy in 2012 with plans to relaunch Saab as an electric-vehicle brand, building a small number of Saab 9-3 models under the old name at the original Trollhättan factory. The revival never gained real traction, and NEVS quietly dropped the Saab badge from its cars altogether by 2014, pivoting instead to unbadged EV development for other markets. The Saab automobile brand, in any meaningful commercial sense, was gone.
Saab Automobile and its parent aerospace company, Saab AB, had already split into separate businesses back in 1990 when GM first bought in. That aerospace and defence arm still exists today, still headquartered in Sweden, still building the Gripen fighter jet — which means, strangely, that the company whose engineers dreamed up the teardrop-shaped Saab 92 in 1947 never actually went out of business. It just stopped making cars.
Why Saab’s Ghost Still Haunts Swedish Car Culture
Drive through Trollhättan today and you will still find Saab club meetups, independent mechanics who specialise in nothing else, and a steady trickle of enthusiasts restoring 900s and 9-3 Vipers rather than letting them go to the scrapyard. Saab Historic Vehicles, a foundation set up after the bankruptcy, maintains the company’s archive and heritage fleet specifically because no corporate owner remained to do it. It is a strikingly different fate from Volvo, the other great Swedish car brand of the twentieth century, which Ford sold to China’s Geely in 2010 and which has since thrived as a global, independently profitable manufacturer under new ownership — proof that a Swedish engineering brand’s survival often has less to do with the quality of its cars than with who ends up steering the balance sheet.
It is tempting to read Saab’s collapse as a story about bad luck: two financial crises, an owner in its own bankruptcy, a rescue that arrived too late. But it is also a story about what happens when a genuinely strange, engineering-led company gets absorbed into an organisation built to standardise rather than experiment. The same instinct that let three Stockholm students turn a losing pitch-competition idea into Klarna, or that pushed Spotify’s founders to rebuild the music industry from Stockholm rather than Silicon Valley, is the same instinct that put a turbocharger in a family car in 1977 and the ignition key on the floor because that is where it belonged in a cockpit. Saab never stopped being an aircraft company that happened to build cars. In the end, that was both the whole point of the brand, and the reason it could not survive being run like anything else.
