Igloo Hotels in the Nordics

Before we look at the different activities you can do in the Arctic region, let’s look at some of the main igloo hotels in this part of the world. Below, you’ll find a selection of our favorites.

Levi Sky Igloo

Levi is one of Finland’s main ski resorts, and people living in Helsinki and some of the country’s other cities regularly head north in the winter to enjoy winter sports. You’ll find plenty of standard hotels throughout the region, but why not go for more of a unique experience instead?

The Levi Sky Igloo is around 20 minutes from Levi by car, and you’ll find a complex featuring several igloo cabins for you to spend the night in. You can enjoy incredible views of Lapland’s nature, a private pool, and various other amenities.

In typical Finnish fashion, the Levi Sky Igloo also has a sauna that you can use when you visit.

Aurora Hut Igloo

If you’re not visiting the Finnish arctic for an extended period, Rovaniemi – Lapland’s largest city – might be a better option. Luckily, you don’t need to miss out on an igloo hotel experience if you’d rather stay here. The Aurora Hut Igloo is just over eight kilometers from the Santa Claus Village, which is one of the main reasons that people visit Rovaniemi.

The igloo has a clear view of the sky, giving you the opportunity to potentially see the Northern Lights without needing to venture outside. You’ll also get a view of the river, and you have the opportunity to try ice fishing in the area.

Each igloo has free Wi-Fi, so you can keep yourself connected to the rest of the world while you’re visiting.

Yggdrasil Igloo Water Huts

We’ve not yet mentioned Sweden on our list of snow igloo hotels in Scandinavia, so we figured that now would be a good time to change that. Close to the Norwegian border, you’ll find the Yggdrasil Igloo Water Huts in Töcksfors.

While the two we’ve already mentioned are located further north in the Nordic region, these ones are unique in the sense that they’re actually quite far south – at least in relative terms to the rest of Sweden. The area is popular for camping, and you’ll find lots of forests and quaint forests in the region.

The Yggdrasil Igloo Water Huts are based on a body of water that divides into larger streams. You can cycle in the surrounding region, and during the winter, you’ve got the opportunity to potentially see the Northern Lights. Having a car is smart for this hotel; it’s over 100km from Oslo Airport.

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

The Norwegian Arctic is arguably the most beautiful region on Earth, and you’ll find the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel around 20km from Alta. Whereas the others we’ve mentioned so far typically have heating, this one is kept at between -4ºC and -7ºC.

At the hotel, you’ll get to stay in an igloo that’s complete with bedding. Close to it, you’ll find a separate building with amenities like a sauna and hot tubs. You can also try out snowmobiling while you’re in the region.

The Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel has an ice bar serving numerous alcoholic beverages.

Activities You Can Do in These Areas

Now that we’ve looked at some of the top igloo hotels in Scandinavia, let’s look at what activities you can do when staying at these venues.

If you’re not interested in skiing, Levi has plenty of other fun things to do. No trip to the Arctic is complete without seeing reindeer, and this safari will let you get up close to these beautiful creatures.

In addition to seeing the reindeer, you’ll also get to enjoy a sled tour with some of the local huskies.

Ice Fishing and Snowmobiling in Levi

If you want to get your pulse racing, you can also try snowmobiling through the Finnish Lapland. This tour will take you through some of the most beautiful nature you’ll ever see, and you’ll also get to try a popular Arctic custom: Ice fishing.

During the winter, many parts of Northern Finland are extremely cold – and a lot of waterways freeze over. You can, however, drill a hole in the water and try fishing. This tour also includes a warm lunch.

If you’re interested in exploring the landscapes of Northern Norway, this winter tour in Alta is worth checking out. You’ll actually visit Sorrisniva as part of the tour, so you can always try staying somewhere else if you’d rather keep that as a fun extra activity.

During this tour, you’ll go on a hike in Alta’s surrounding regions and enjoy some Norwegian delicacies – along with coffee. The tour is a great option if you want to learn more about how people live in this part of the world.

Enjoy Your Stay in the Far North

You’ll find plenty of igloo hotels in Scandinavia and Finland, and each of them offers a unique experience. Besides being away from the big city lights, you can also enjoy the opportunity to see the Northern Lights and participate in numerous fun activities.

When booking an igloo hotel experience in Scandinavia, keep in mind that some will include heating. However, this isn’t the case for all of them. So, you’ll want to make sure that you bring extra clothing if necessary.
