As you might have expected from the title, the film follows — well — a man whose name is Ove. Ove’s wife recently died in the movie, which results in his mental health taking a nosedive and attempts to end his life — which others stop him from doing so on multiple occasions. 

Ove has to deal with several other traumas that have plagued his mind throughout his life, such as the loss of a parent during childhood.

Arn: The Knight Templar

The story follows Erik’s journey through boarding school, which includes romance and friendship along the way. He also returns home on various occasions, but his stepfather’s behavior does not subside during this period. 

Evil is set in the 1950s and features several famous Swedish actors and actresses. Andreas Wilson plays the role of Erik, while others like Gustaf Skarsgård and the late Björn Granth also feature. The movie is based on a book and was nominated for several awards domestically. 

At the 2004 Guldbagge Awards, Evil won in the Best Film category. 

Easy Cash

Snabba Cash follows the story of a man who lives in a wealthy part of Stockholm but does not earn the money to support his lifestyle. He turns to the criminal underworld to fund the life he gives off that he has, selling cocaine with someone who he knows through the business he already works for. 

Over the movie, JW — the main character — must complete several tasks in his bid to earn more money. He is joined by several other gangsters, and the movie covers several relationships and particular missions that must be fulfilled. 

Snabba Cash features several prominent characters, including Joel Kinnaman — who plays the role of JW in the film. Meanwhile, Fares Fares and Lisa Henni also play key roles in the film.

Off Track

Off Track is one of the newer Swedish films on Netflix that we’re featuring on our list. It was released in 2022 and is known in Swedish as “Ur Spår”. The story follows a single mother who is unemployed, while her brother is currently training for a skiing event during the movie. 

The main character is fed up with how her life is going and chooses to take to the slopes with her brother. The duo go to Vasaloppet, which is in the center of Sweden and prime skiing territory. 

The movie features various Swedish actors and actresses. Included in these are Fredrik Hallgren and Kelly Flogell. Off Track is available to watch in multiple Scandinavian markets. 

438 Dagar

438 Dagar, which translates in English to 438 Days, is one of several Swedish movies on Netflix in the drama category. 

The story follows two Swedish journalists who find themselves in the brutal conditions of an Ethiopian prison. While both claim that they’re not guilty of international terrorism, they still do not get any favorable treatment in the facilities. 

The movie goes back to 2011, with the two journalists attempting to cross the border from Somalia to Ethiopia. However, they do not do so legally — and their initial attempts are not successful. But eventually, they strike gold — or that’s what they think at the very least. 

During the movie, the journalists were sentenced to 11 years for their perceived crimes. While in prison, they meet other journalists and writers who were also put behind bars. 

Sommaren med Göran

Year released: 2009

Sommaren med Göran is known as “Summer With Göran” or “ A Midsummer Night’s Party” in English. The movie follows the main character, whose name is Göran, as he aims to throw a party for the much-celebrated Midsummer event in the country. Not long before, Göran’s previous girlfriend left him. 

The movie was released in 2009. 

During the movie, Göran’s aim is to find himself a new girlfriend. Peter Magnusson, who plays the main role of Sven in Once Upon a Time in Phuket, is Göran in the movie. The film also features Moa Tuve Amanda Gammel alongside Dan Ekborg and various other actors and actresses. 

Sommaren med Göran was directed by Steffan Lindberg. It lasts for just under 100 minutes in total.

The 101-Year-Old Man Who Skipped Out on the Bill and Disappeared follows the story of a 101-year-old who is still living his best life into his century. The movie takes us to various exciting places, including Berlin. 

It stars the Swedish actor and comedian Robert Gustafsson, and several languages feature throughout the film — including Russian and German.
