Danish Movies On Netflix

The 15 best Danish movies on Netflix today!

If you’re looking for new content to watch on Netflix, you’ll find movies and TV shows in countless languages beyond English. Danish movies on Netflix are plentiful, and many include subtitles — making them perfect if you want to learn the language.

Danish films aren’t as well-known in other countries, especially compared to neighboring nations like Sweden. However, you will find plenty of hidden gems — along with one or two actors that you’ll probably recognize.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about Danish movies featuring on Netflix. You’ll learn more about how you can watch Danish films if you don’t live in Denmark, and you’ll also discover a list of the top movies to watch.

Are there any Danish movies on Netflix?

The Danish film industry is pretty big, and it’s also a cornerstone of Danish culture. Netflix has a broad selection of Danish movies, with dozens of titles available. You’ll find films in several categories, including drama and romance.

And if you’ve got children, you can enjoy one of the many Danish films designed for that particular audience on this streaming platform.

The Danish films available on Netflix come from various eras, with many of them being released in the 21st century. If you don’t yet understand the Danish language, you don’t need to worry; many of the shows on our list have English subtitles.

Because Denmark is a small country, many of actors and actresses regularly feature in the different films on Netflix. This isn’t too different from the other Scandinavian countries; you’ll often see the same thing in Norwegian and Swedish movies too.

How can I watch Danish movies on Netflix?

The answer to this question depends on where you live. If you’re based in Denmark, you will — naturally — have access to most of the best Danish movies on Netflix. The same is true if you live in the other Nordic countries.

If you don’t have Netflix Denmark, you can still watch the movies that take your pick from our list. Netflix has rolled out many Danish-language movies to its customers outside of the Nordic region, including to people in the United Kingdom.

However, you will not have the same selection as you would if you lived in Denmark and its neighboring countries.

When based outside of Denmark, your best option is to type “Danish” into the search bar. After letting your Netflix do the rest, you’ll see what is available in your region.

But what happens if you find a movie on our list that does not feature on your version of Netflix? You can always try using a virtual private network (VPN). After signing up, you can select a Danish server.

Once you’re connected, you should have access to Danish content — including its offerings on Netflix and other streaming services.

We don’t recommend using a free VPN as some free versions do not have Danish servers, and those without a paid subscription structure might not be as safe. If you want to compare the best VPNs for Denmark, you can always read our guide.

Against the Ice

Year released: 2022

Where to watch: Netflix

Against the Ice is a movie about adventure and testing your limits. It’s set in Greenland, which — like the Faroe Islands — is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The movie is based on Ejnar Mikkelsen, who is one of the most famous Arctic explorers; in real life, he has a mountain range in Greenland named after him.

Against the Ice is based on a book called Two Against the Ice, which itself tells the story of a polar expedition that took place in 1909. During the movie, Mikkelsen is joined by another explorer — and the two become close.

However, they also run into multiple trials and tribulations — many of which severely test their friendship.

The main aim of the expedition was to determine whether Greenland was one piece of land mass or something else. Greenland was already part of Denmark at the time, and it had been since 1814. Now, however, the island has a lot more autonomy than was the case back then.

The movie follows two brothers from Denmark who decide to embark on an adventure to Southern Europe. What’s the objective of their trip, we hear you ask? Simple: Bring their deceased father’s body back to their homeland.

The father of the two brothers, who themselves are named Emil and Magnus, is in Spain. Originally, the brothers wanted to transport the body back to Denmark — but that would’ve cost them a significant amount of money.

As you might expect, transporting a dead body on your own comes with complications — and the duo runs into various challenges throughout the movie.

Summer of ’92

Movie title in Danish: Sommeren ’92

Year released: 2015

Where to watch: Netflix

In 1992, Denmark’s men’s soccer team went to Sweden to play in the European Championships. The only reason they were at the tournament was due to a technicality; Yugoslavia was disqualified due to the ongoing war that ultimately broke the country up. But while in Sweden, the Danes shocked everyone.

Despite an unconvincing start to the tournament and few expectations that they would go very far anyway, Denmark won Euro 1992. The Danes beat much-fancied Germany 2-0 in the final, and they did so without star man Michael Laudrup — who did not travel with the squad to Sweden in the first place.

Summer of ’92 is a dramatization of the Danish national team’s journey to victory. It largely follows the national team’s coach, Richard Møller Nielsen, who faced significant scrutiny in the build-up to the tournament.

We also learn more about his players, including Brian Laudrup — who emerged from the shadows of his talented brother to help the team secure success.

The Finns liked the idea of the movie, too, and made their own version of it.

Klassefesten 2 is a story of sorrow, with one friend dying at a bachelor’s party. The group plans a funeral, which — naturally — does not all go to plan. The third one is a little less dark, focusing on a baptism. The only problem is that the child being baptized is one of the group’s ex-wives.

The audio for each of the movies is in Danish. You can get subtitles in Danish and Swedish, so you might want to save these for when you’ve picked up a decent amount of knowledge in either language.

Ida is played in the movie by Trine Dyrholm. Other actors and actresses to feature include Pierce Brosnan, Sebastian Jessen, and Kim Bodnia. Like Klassefesten, you can only get Danish and Swedish subtitles for this movie.

Other actors and actresses in the film include Martin Buch and Rasmus Botoft.

A Royal Affair

Movie title in Danish: En Kongelige Affære

Year released: 2012

Where to watch: Netflix

Of course, it wouldn’t be wise to mention Danish movies on Netflix and not give Mads Mikkelsen a proper shoutout. He features in the movie A Royal Affair, which you can also find on Amazon Prime.

The movie is set in Denmark of yesteryear, and it follows the deteriorating relationship between King Christian VII and his Caroline Matilda of Great Britain.

King Christian VII is not in the best health during the movie, and a physician from Germany is tasked with looking after him. Over time, Caroline grows further apart from the king — and closer to the physician.

The Exception

Movie title in Danish: Undtagelsen

Year released: 2020

Where to watch: Netflix
